I want to force myself into the process of learning by explaining areas that I happen to tinker with.
First of all, Welcome to my new page!
Why have I started yet another blog? Well… Actually, mainly due to AI. I have always wanted to write blog posts since I finished my degree, but never really had the time to do so. One of the things that kept stealing my time was (apart from family, work and friends) probably that it was more fun to build stuff than to write about it. But due to AI I haven’t stopped building. And I haven’t stopped loving building things. In fact, I am shipping more software than ever, and I have multiple agents working as I am writing this exact sentence - and I love it! No, the reason is that I have a profound fear that I have stopped learning as much.
Before going more into that, let’s just briefly touch upon learning. I have a bit of unusual background as a physiotherapist – and one of the few things I do still remember from those days is that you must work out frequently to keep your muscles strong and body in good health. I do also remember that the brain is not a muscle, but I always think of it as one. In my very brief career as physiotherapist, I saw quite a few elderly people and one thing really struck me. Two different people being the same age could differ incredibly mentally. One could be sharp as a knife while the other could be dull as ditchwater. My personal belief is that those that try and stay up to date and are interested in understanding new things are those that end up having a brighter mind and are happier in the long run.
Anyway, back to the “age of AI”. As I said, being able to ship things fast with AI is fun, but I feel like I am not learning as much – or at least not the same as I used to. When really reflecting upon this, I am still learning a lot, but it is simply on another level. It’s hard to measure, but what I do know is that I miss the process of getting my hands dirty. And I want to emphasize “the process”. I don’t necessarily want to write all the code again – it’s fine AI does that. But I do still hunger for that deeper understanding of the inner workings of a system, framework, language or whatever you’d imagine. Usually, I learned that by tinkering with some hobby projects, but not anymore even though the number of hobby projects has increased tenfold. I simply do not learn the same by reading code written by AI as I did by writing it myself.
When writing code, I was forced into expressing my ideas and my understanding of how to solve a problem or how to build a solution. But I do not have to express this through code. There are multiple ways of doing this and I know back from when I studied that I always learned a lot trying to explain complicated stuff to others. That is why I have started this blog. I want to force myself into the process of learning by explaining areas that I happen to tinker with. For this reason, I will have one rule, and one rule only: Everything written in this blog will be 100% written by me. However, I will be using AI to build solutions and learn about them, but all the reflections and learnings I get in the process will be written by me personally in this blog.
